Asian markets close sharply lower after US issues new list of Chinese products for potential tariffs

Markets in Asia closed steeply lower on Wednesday, with most major indexes tumbling following the release of a list of an additional $200 billion in Chinese goods on which the U.S. is considering imposing tariffs. The goods on the U.S. government’s list would be subject to 10 percent tariffs, according to a statement from U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, who said his office will proceed with a public notice and comment period before the levies are officially imposed. China markets were the worst hit, with the Shanghai composite sinking 1.78 […]

Why was Elon Musk at the Thai cave rescue?

Elon Musk has tweeted that he visited the Thai rescue operation but did not share images of himself at the site. Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk’s attempt to help the Thai cave rescue mission has attracted both praise and criticism. The SpaceX and Tesla chief posted on social media that he had visited the operation’s command center, where he said he had left a mini-submarine that had been designed to carry a trapped football team to safety. The head of the rescue mission thanked Mr. Musk for his offer. But he […]

North Korea: US is making ‘gangster-like’ demands on denuclearization

North Korea has accused the US of using “gangster-like” tactics to push it towards nuclear disarmament after a fresh round of high-level talks. It branded the US attitude at the meeting as “extremely troubling”. The statement, by an unnamed foreign ministry official, gave a starkly different account from one provided by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo just hours before. He had said progress was made during his two-day visit to Pyongyang. It is the first time he has visited North Korea since a summit between Donald Trump and Kim […]

It’s Been a Lousy Week in Politics, and Some of It Is Obama’s Fault

It’s been a horrible week in politics, and it just keeps getting worse. Now, I don’t entirely agree with my colleague Terrell J. Starr’s assessment from yesterday. I don’t think we’re fucked—yet. But if we are collectively watching the movie of America on a date with Authoritarianism, then they just finished dinner, canceled Uber and are heading up to the hotel room for a few more “drinks.” We all know where this is going. Donald Trump will appoint a maniac, right-wing justice who will be 15 minutes out of law […]

Indiana police say they seized ‘Trump-shaped ecstasy pills’

PERU, Ind. (AP) — Some drug traffickers appear to be using President Donald Trump’s image to brand their illegal wares. An Indiana State Police news release about 129 arrests in a series of drug busts in northern Indiana includes a photo of what police describe as “Trump-shaped ecstasy pills.” They are orange and stamped with a face. On the back are the words “great again,” an apparent reference to Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” Traffickers sometimes produce uniquely shaped or colored drugs as a marketing technique to encourage […]

Let’s Watch Mark Zuckerberg Testify in Front of Congress

Get ready for the wildest couple hours C-Span has to offer. By Stan Horaczek April 10, 2018 By now, you’re all brushed up on the Facebook news. You’ve read our story about how we got to the point where Mark Zuckerberg needs to testify in front of Congress. You’ve checked your own account to see if Cambridge Analytica got your data. You contemplated deleting Facebook completely. Now, it’s time to see what Zuckerberg has to say. You can watch the stream of the video above or check out the official page for the committee here. 2:35 pm: We’re getting started with comments from Science and Transportation Committee chair, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota. He’s laying out the details of the issue as well as a top-level analysis of why people feel victimized by this scandal. “I’m not convinced that Facebook’s users have the information they need to make meaningful choices.” 2:40 pm: Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein now providing commentary. She’s focusing on the Russian Internet Research Agency issue, which Thune mostly avoided. 2:45 pm: Senator Chuck Grassley now making his points to Zuckerberg. Almost everyone is explicitly reminding Zuckerberg of how many users the service has. Grassley is calling out specific revenue numbers. Now, he called out other tech companies like Google, Apple, and Amazon. Nice reminder of the possible scope of this thing. Grassley seems to steer clear of Russia as well, but he did mention the Obama […]

Could Catalonia make a success of independence?

Amid speculation that the Catalan parliament might unilaterally declare independence, some of the region’s banks decided to move their legal headquarters to other parts of Spain. Meanwhile, the government in Madrid says any such declaration would have no effect. But supposing the region did eventually secede, would Catalonia be able to stand on its own two feet? Trappings of statehood To the casual observer, Catalonia looks like it has already got many of the trappings of a state. Flags. A parliament. The leader, Carles Puigdemont. The region has its own […]

Trump challenges Rex Tillerson to IQ test

US President Donald Trump has challenged his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, to an IQ test, in the latest sign of discord between the two. He made the remark in a magazine interview when asked about reports that Mr Tillerson had called him a moron. “I think it’s fake news,” Mr Trump told Forbes, “but if he did that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win.” Mr Trump is due to have lunch on Tuesday with Mr Tillerson. Reports […]
